This handy workaround was detailed by Notion.so, so thanks to them for the discovery. While there are no known compatibility issues with Big Sur, M1 support is available in future updates. Presumably in the not distant future, Homebrew will be updated to support ARM and Apple Silicon natively, but for the time being, use this workaround to get your x86 and Homebrew terminal apps working just fine on your new M1 Apple Silicon Mac, be it a MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or Mac mini. Before doing anything, go to your Applications folder, right-click on iTerm, click 'Get Info', and check the 'Open using Rosetta.

iTerm Once you install iTerm 2, you'll probably want to install Homebrew, Oh My ZSH, NVM and whatever else. Homebrew is a fantastic utility with a variety of great packages for more advanced Mac users and those accustomed to the command line. Run the “Rosetta Terminal” as usual, which will fully support Homebrew and other x86 command line apps I just picked up a new MacBook Pro M1 and decided to take this opportunity to document all of the various applications that I use on a daily basis.

Check the box for “Open using Rosetta”, then close the Get Info window.

Now select the freshly renamed ‘Rosetta Terminal’ app and right-click and choose “Get Info” (or hit Command+i).

Rename the duplicated Terminal app something obvious and distinct, like ‘Rosetta Terminal’.

Before I did this, I was getting a bunch of undecipherable errors from various command line tools because (presumably) they have compatibility issues with the M1 chip.

Select Terminal.app and right-click on it, then choose “Duplicate” Before doing anything, go to your Applications folder, right-click on iTerm, click 'Get Info', and check the 'Open using Rosetta' option.

Locate the Terminal application within the Utilities folder (Finder > Go menu > Utilities).
